A high, mountainous island formed from two ancient volcanic cones in the South Pacific Ocean, Tahiti is famous for its captivating coastline and has made a name for itself in beach soccer.

More recently, the territory has also equipped itself to make a bigger impact in the 11-a-side game. Though the island’s geography and topography highlight the challenges faced by several OFC Member Associations (MAs), Tahiti is also a shining example of the efforts being made to overcome them.

The Tahitian Football Federation (FTF) has been particularly proactive in driving progress, laying substantial groundwork to bolster football, and investing significantly in infrastructure. FIFA, meanwhile, has supported those endeavours through its various development schemes.

“FIFA’s development programmes have played a crucial role in strengthening our structures, facilities and training programmes,” explained FTF President Thierry Ariiotima.

“In that regard, the installation of a new artificial pitch, made possible thanks to FIFA’s support, has provided the FTF with a modern, high-quality playing surface designed to be used by our national teams, as well as for some of our youth and senior competitions and training sessions for our FIFA Talent Academy.”

Opened in Pirae in 2023, the artificial pitch, which was backed by funding from the FIFA Forward Programme, illustrates the momentum that the FTF has generated for Tahitian football, enabling growth across all disciplines of the sport rather than relying solely on beach soccer success.

The construction of the pitch also ties in with another important FIFA initiative on the island: the Talent Development Scheme (TDS), which aims to provide pathways into the professional game for every talent in each of FIFA’s 211 MAs. As part of the TDS in Tahiti, a FIFA Talent Academy was inaugurated last November – the first in Oceania – providing a training hub for the best young Tahitian talent.

In practical terms, the FIFA Talent Academy aims to provide promising prospects with access to high-quality training and support, enabling them to fulfil their potential and, ultimately, contribute to fostering the domestic game. Initially, 20 of Tahiti’s most talented boys joined the FIFA Talent Academy, which will also welcome its first intake of girls in the coming weeks.

“The recognition of our Talent Academy under the TDS marks a major milestone for the FTF. It is a testament to the dedication and hard work that has gone into identifying, supporting and developing young talent, whilst providing new opportunities for the growth and future of the Tahitian game,” said Ariiotima.

Raw technical ability is clearly not an issue. On the sand, Tahiti have taken part in the last eight editions of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup™, making it all the way to the final twice. On the grass, they qualified for the 2009 and 2019 instalments of the FIFA U-20 World Cup™. Now, the foundations have been laid so that Tahitian football can set its sights on new targets.

“Tahiti has a young population, a society that is looking forward, and your FIFA Talent Academy at the Tahitian Football Association’s headquarters reflects that as you build the future of the beautiful game,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino last November.

A breath of fresh air seems to be blowing through Tahitian football – fitting for a territory that is part of the Polynesian Windward Islands. And whilst Tahiti’s geography may impose certain constraints, it cannot dampen the islanders’ passion for football or determination to see the game flourish. The building blocks are now in place on the island to pave the way for tomorrow’s rising stars to shoot higher and go further.
